Farm & Cottage Holidays
Every one of our holidaymakers is helping the environmental welfare of the region
Farm and Cottage Holidays, based in Bideford, is a family run business with a team of 45 staff that handle the letting and promotion of around 1,000 holiday cottages throughout Devon, Cornwall, Somerset & Dorset. They launched their new scheme at the end of 2008 and are now donating 10% of holiday booking fees to projects protecting the natural landscapes and wildlife of the region. With around 25,000 bookings anticipated in 2009 and each one generating a donation averaging £1, the company is now running one of the biggest such schemes in the Southwest. Farm & Cottage Holidays have already given £12,000 to the Devon Wildlife Trust to help fund the protection of wetlands. One of the main initiatives to benefit will be the trust’s new ‘Working Wetlands’ project that aims to restore the wet Culm Grasslands of North Devon. These are some of the rarest and most vital habitats in the country, supporting a range of species and also acting as effective carbon sinks.
Farm & Cottage Holidays Managing Director, James Morris, explains “Our environmental credentials are very important to us as a business and working with the wildlife trust has already helped us to give something very tangible back to the environment and the local community.”
Farm & Cottage holidays are now working on a new website that will expand the information on such projects available to their customers. James Morris believes that their property owners are extremely supportive and he hopes to see the business working with other sustainability projects in the future. In the future they would like to be able to audit their activities with a goal of ensuring that their holiday business is carbon-neutral.
