Beverley Holidays
Helping to look after Torbay’s marine environment
Beverley Holidays is a family business running four adjoining holiday parks near to Goodrington Beaches in Paignton, South Devon with a total of 475 units. The company is a Green Tourism Business Scheme award holder and won the Holiday Park of the Year at SW England Tourism Excellence Awards in 2008.In walking distance of some of the resort’s most popular beaches the company has been keen to focus on protecting the marine environment. Since 2008, park customers have been paying 5p for any carrier bags purchased in the sites’ shops and in 2008 this raised £417 for the Marine conservation Society.
Looking closer to home they decided to support the Torbay Coast & Countryside Trust in 2009 and raised £561 which will help towards the management of the coastal nature reserves and footpaths.
By placing a charge on carrier bags Beverley Holidays hopes to increase re-use of bags and reduce the number of bags in circulation. It is estimated that many thousands of birds, whales and seals die each year when they become tangled up in bags or try to eat them.
Claire Jeavons ‘When we started the scheme in 2008 we were a little nervous at the beginning, wondering how our customers would react. We were really delighted when our customers responded so positively and they are now so much more aware of the damage that carrier bags cause and like to feel that they are doing their bit to look after their favourite seaside resort. I would definitely recommend the scheme to other local businesses in the bay.’
