Babbacombe Model Village
Wishes that make a difference
Babbacombe Model Village in Torquay is a firm favourite with all ages and has attracted millions of visitors since it first opened in 1963. Over the years it has always remained quirky, topical and humorous with mini features including foxhunt protesters, a wind farm and beautifully manicured gardens in miniature. The original owner, Tom Dobbins, installed a wishing well when the village first opened and over the years visitors have donated over £80,000 to a range of good causes, both local and national. Charities that have benefited include Rowcroft Hospice, the Children’s Hospice SW, Gt Ormond Street and a local community centre. The Village is also supporting Torbay Coast & Countryside Trust, which maintains the Torbay section of the South West Coast Path.
General Manager Simon Wills recognises that his visitors love the stunning landscapes that surround the village on the edge of popular Babbacombe Downs. “The coast path runs right past our attraction and we know that a number of our visitors come here because they have seen us as they walk the route.”
The wishing well is a traditional Devon stone and thatch construction and the visitors don’t need much of a prompt to donate. Simon explains, “By the time they reach the wishing well they have enjoyed seeing most of the features in the village and, in the best of humour, are very willing to help worthy causes that support deserving people and places.
